Publication Ethics

Customary Law Review is committed to the highest standards of publication ethics and follows the Core Practices and guidelines of the Committee on Publication Ethics (COPE). All parties involved in the publication process are expected to observe the duties below.

Duties of Authors

  • Submit original work that has not been published or is not under consideration elsewhere, in any language. Publishing an English version of an article already published in another language is treated as duplicate publication.
  • Cite all sources accurately. Fabricated, inaccurate, or unverifiable references are not acceptable.
  • List as authors only those who made a substantial contribution, and state each author's role using the CRediT taxonomy.
  • Disclose all sources of funding and any conflict of interest.
  • Disclose the use of generative AI tools in the preparation of the manuscript, naming the tool and describing how it was used. AI tools cannot be listed as authors, and authors remain fully responsible for the content.
  • Obtain appropriate ethical approval and informed consent for research involving human participants.
  • Respect the rights of indigenous and local communities. Research that draws on customary knowledge, ritual, or community data should follow the principle of free, prior and informed consent and must not disclose knowledge that the community regards as sacred or restricted without its permission.
  • Promptly notify the editor of any significant error found in their published work and cooperate in correcting it.

Duties of Editors

  • Evaluate manuscripts solely on their academic merit, without regard to the authors' race, gender, religion, nationality, institutional affiliation, or political views.
  • Keep all information about submitted manuscripts confidential.
  • Decline to handle manuscripts in which they have a conflict of interest.
  • Respond to allegations of misconduct in accordance with COPE guidance.

Duties of Reviewers

  • Assess manuscripts objectively and support their comments with clear arguments.
  • Treat manuscripts as confidential documents and not use unpublished material for their own research.
  • Decline to review when they lack the relevant expertise or have a conflict of interest.
  • Refrain from uploading manuscripts to generative AI tools, since doing so breaches confidentiality.
  • Alert the editor to any suspected plagiarism, duplicate publication, or data fabrication.
